MENTORING

Volunteers are paired up as big brothers to assist youths with their academic work, provide one on one tutoring and character building activities. As well as being positive adult role models in their lives.

INTRAMURAL SPORTS

WHJSA Provides youths the opportunity for competition and fun with friends in a wide variety of individual and team activities. Intramural activities include the traditional sports such as volleyball, kickball and basketball.

SPORTS LEAGUE

(Basketball, Baseball, Martial Arts & Soccer) All leagues are organized into teams that engage in a full season of play. Practices can take place in neighborhood parks, basketball courts gyms, and playground.

ACADEMIC LITERACY

Participants must submit quarterly report cards to their coaches. If grades don’t meet the program’s standards, they cannot participate in upcoming games. Mentors and tutors will help improve grades, and youths may be referred to formal tutoring programs if needed. Additionally, youths will research a sport or athlete, completing a paper on its origin, rules, the athlete's life, and their involvement. Computers will be provided for research.

WORK ETHICS

To provide additional support to the youth, workshops will be offered as ongoing employability skills training. Here open discussion will be facilitated allowing youth to share their work experiences, barriers or obstacles encountered during their work experience. This will assist in merging the classroom knowledge with real life work experience. The process will reinforce good work ethics.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

All participants must complete a community service project developed by Jaybie in collaboration with local organizations. Youths will volunteer at least 10 hours per season, providing cross-age and peer tutoring. They will assist with literacy activities for children, fostering civic responsibility, pride in their communities, and collaborative learning.
HELLO FELLOW PLAYERS

Growing up in Bronx wasn't easy. I had a lot of distractions. There weren't many good examples to follow so it made it very difficult for me to find my way. However, there was a great youth organization called Jaybie’s Baseball that helped me find my way through great sports. My father enrolled me in their baseball program and I quickly grew a passion for the sport. I began learning the fundamentals from the great coaches that exist within the Jaybie’s Baseball organization. The skills I learned at Jaybie’s Baseball carried me throughout my educational career as a student. And now as a Teacher in the sports and fitness industry I will continue to support their mission to help children.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Growing up in Washington Heights wasn't easy. I had a lot of distractions and hardships. There weren't many role models or good examples to follow so it made it very difficult for me to find my way. However, there was a great youth organization called Jaybie’s that helped me find my way through great sports and leadership programs. My father enrolled me in their basketball program and I quickly grew a passion for the sport. I began learning the fundamentals from the great coaches and incredible mentors that exist within the Jaybie’s organization. The skills I learned at Jaybie’s carried me throughout my educational career as a student and also as an adult in my professional career as a leader in the nonprofit industry. I am honored to have been part of their respective movement and now as a professional in the health and fitness industry I will continue to support their mission to help children.

Most sports academies offer programs for children as young as 5 or 6 years old. It's important to choose a program that aligns with your child's physical development and interest in the sport. Many academies have programs grouped by age and skill level to ensure a positive experience.

Different academies have varying coaching philosophies. It's essential to inquire whether the focus is on skill development, teamwork, fun, or competition. Look for an academy that prioritizes holistic development, fostering a love for the sport and encouraging personal growth alongside athletic skills.

Commitment levels can vary widely. Some academies may require a specific number of practice sessions each week, attendance at competitions, and parental involvement in transportation or volunteering. Ensure you understand these expectations to see if they fit into your family's schedule.

Inquire about the academy's safety protocols, including how they handle injuries. A reputable academy should have trained staff who prioritize safety, provide emergency procedures, and implement injury prevention measures. Ask about their medical support and how they communicate with parents regarding any injuries.
